Job Descriptions for Open Positions 2008

Starting in January, Ring Lake Ranch begins looking for qualified staff: wranglers, cooks, a housekeeper, and a hike leader. We hope that several staff members from 2007 will be joining us again in 2008, but we do know that we will have openings for cooks.

Wranglers
The wranglers work together to:
Carry out all aspects of a fun and safe riding program for the guests.
Assess guests’ riding ability and assign them to appropriate horses and rides.
Be responsible for the health and welfare of the horse herd, including feed, shoeing, and veterinary care, both routine and emergency.
Assist the Facilities Manager in the purchase and transportation of hay to meet current and upcoming years’ needs.
Clean and maintain all tack.
Assist the Facilities Manager to ensure that horse trailers are safe and well-maintained.

Note: As with all Ring Lake Ranch staff and depending on their skills, wranglers are expected to help in other areas of Ranch life: for example, maintenance, food preparation, housekeeping, etc. when not needed to lead rides or tend the horses.

Qualifications: Extensive experience working with horses is a must, and applicants must be able to demonstrate ability to fulfill all aspects of the job description. Besides that, wranglers need to be good with people, flexible, willing to work at what needs to be done at a guest ranch/retreat center.

Cooks: 2 full-time, 2 half-time
Prepare tasty, healthy meals for 25-45 guests, help plan menus, supervise cleanup, and order food.
Manage time so that meals are ready when scheduled.

Note: Half-time cook(s) will split their time between meal preparation and either housekeeping or hike-leading.

Qualifications: Experience with cooking for large groups is a plus; loving to cook is valuable; a sense of humor comes in handy; flexibility never hurts; some schooling in food-handling, kitchen management, and ordering would be useful; ability to work harmoniously with others genuinely important; stamina is virtually required.

Hike Leader: half-time
Responsible for planning and leading a safe and educational hiking program appropriate to the ability and fitness levels of guests. Coordinates with the Director on weekly scheduling of activities.

Qualifications: Ideally, the hike-leader should be in excellent physical condition, be an avid hiker, enjoy people, be willing and able to adjust hikes to the hikers’ competencies, point out interesting information about the flora and fauna of the Valley, know CPR and first aid, and be able to either do cooking or housekeeping.

Housekeeper: half-time
Assists ensuring that the ranch buildings are kept in a clean and pleasant state for the enjoyment of the guests. Common areas such as the dining room, living room, chapel, office, and library are checked and maintained on a daily basis. Responsible for checking on and helping with any additional cleanup needed of cabins between sessions. Assists in delivery of linen to be laundered and restocks linen shed when linens are returned.

Qualifications: The housekeeper should know how to clean and appreciate the importance of cleanliness, organize supplies and linens, schedule cleaning, have patience when things get dirty again and too soon, and either cook or lead hikes.
