Many thanks to the terrific staff we had this summer - junior staff members Kassi Leseberg, Trissy Glasgow, Martha Stearns, Jill Bartels, Pearl Badtke, Hayli Leseberg, Jarett Veldhouse, Nate Shaffer and Connor Piontek all helped with a myriad of chores and added spice to the community at the ranch. Janie Mickelson, Winslow Bent, and Margayle Weiss kept us well-fed, while Darrel Glasgow and Robert Hoskins worked diligently getting the ranch facilities in good shape. Volunteer Carol Carpenter tamed the laundry-shed and provided much appreciated assistance in the kitchen and around the ranch. Wranglers Elly Stewart and Becky Harmon, together with hike leader John Townsend, led us in exploration of the ranch environs. Joan and I are grateful to all the staff for their terrific work and spirit.

Those who came to the ranch this summer saw some changes as soon as they got here: the new bridge, new surfacing on the road, the Dining Room adorned with its new deck and wheelchair-accessible ramp. Once inside the cabins, we all benefited from the new mattresses and décor. What most guests didn't see was the new and improved staff bunkhouse behind Top Cabin, complete with plumbing!

It was a tough summer at the corral, as Elly lost her beloved Shadow, then Sophie, within a few short weeks. Thanks to the generosity of many guests and staff, she is now the proud owner of Dakota Boots. We'll also miss Roanie who passed away peacefully in September at the ripe old age of 24. We are very fortunate to have several new four-legged friends, though, who quickly got into the routine at the ranch. Cole, Big John, Calamity Jane, Dolly, Ranger, and Traveler joined old-timers Rufus, Chinook and Bullwinkle in our permanent herd.

It was truly a great season at the ranch, and I'm most grateful to all of you who made it so rewarding. See you next summer!!

VOLUNTEERS AT RING LAKE RANCH

In the 1999 Fall Carillon, we asked if any one might be willing to help us open the Ranch for the 2000 season. We knew there was much to be done. All the repairs that accumulate over time in anyone's home were present here in abundance. Aging cabins groaned with an assortment of needs. Porches and screen doors were sagging. Some furniture was falling apart or close to it. We developed a list of projects which grew to many pages, even continuing to grow as we worked.

Response to our request was heart-warming. Friends of the Ranch with generous spirits and helping hands came from around the country. Reconditioning, repair, curtain making, cabin cleaning, painting and a host of other efforts have brought the Ranch to a better physical condition than it has enjoyed in years. We are more grateful than we could ever express to the following folks for the ways they have blessed the Ranch in their gifts of themselves and their talents:

Don Bachtell  Dick McIntosh
Jack Carlson  Paula Wellnitz
Vicki Finley  Dwight Haberman
Gordon & Bunny Pfister  Jana Roice
Dan & Pat Stewart  Joe Buffaloe
Lee Ramsey  Don Park
Collette Brooks  Alan & Jeanie Mebane
Harry Wilson  Gene Tucker
Priscilla Marsh  Lynn Cunningham
Mike Donelson  Carol Carpenter
Larry & Nancy Veldhouse, Tescia, Ellena, and Angelika Veldhouse  Robert Hoskins

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS!

Early in the summer, we celebrated not one but two special birthdays. Dwight Habeman (volunteer) and Darrel Glasgow (long time associate and ranch staff this summer) both celebrated #69 with a surprise gathering.
