FROM THE BACK PORCH

My wife Marge and I, frequently with members of our family, have visited Ring Lake Ranch twelve times over the past sixteen years. During our first summer in 1983 we had the pleasure of getting to know Maggie Kahin. Unfortunately, it was her last summer. Her vision for RLR, however, has been faithfully nourished and implemented both by the Board of Directors and by the various program directors who have led the Ranch over the years.

This was my first experience of being a member of the staff--a different, but certainly not unpleasant change in perspective. Although the time after Labor Day is considered post-season, it was definitely a busy time which called on all the resources of an ever-dwindling number of staff. When Board President Gene Tucker asked me to come to finish out the last three weeks of the season as manager, he made it sound as if my august presence was all that would be needed to make things run smoothly, and that I could count on spending my time fishing. (Old Testament professor speaks with "forked tongue!!!!").

As a Southern California city dweller who is also a fall foliage "junkie" the timing couldn't have been more perfect. My thanks to all the staff, but especially to Ruth Venable, longtime friend and adviser to Ring Lake, and her sister Ann Chandler who were an immense help in making things run smoothly. I had the opportunity to see summer turn into fall and Torrey Valley become a very different place than I had been used to during early to mid-summer. Warm days, cold night, some rain, some very, very windy times (Wind River!!!) and even some early season snow contributed to turning currant bushes bright red, cottonwoods and aspen yellow and the bushes and trees along Torrey Creek and around the Lily Pond every color in between. What a delight.

Several California friends knowing that we are inveterate travelers and never seem to go to the same place twice have frequently asked what has drawn us back to Ring Lake so many times. Recently several of these folks have had an opportunity to visit the area and at least stop by Ring Lake for a brief visit. Upon returning they have remarked that they now understand what we have found so special about this place and the community which it helps to create.

See you next year!
